Shona Nunan : Finding the Earth Goddess
Out of the plateau of Plan d'Aups rises suddenly a mountain range 12 km long. Near the center of this range is a smooth cliff with a vertical face nearly 150 m high, and in the middle of this cliff is the large cave "Baomo" where Mary Magdalene is said to have spent the later years of her life.
We will hike up to this sacred cave, through an ancient forest that legend says has never been cut down, following the path of pilgrims, including popes, kings, and queens, who have journeyed here since at least the 5th century. A monastery, still in use, was built on the cliff next to the cave. Services are held in the cave during Christmas and Easter each year.
The nearby Grotte aux Oeufs, or Cave of the Eggs, is reached by descending with a rope through a vaginal-like opening in the cliff. At the bottom, women leave now, as they have done for centuries, offerings and prayers for fertility.
We'll skip the descent on our visit, but it's interesting to remark the importance La Sainte Baume has held for women throughout time.
